10 Home Exterior Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is an instinctive task for most of us. As the holidays end and we start looking forward to spring, something within us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing, and purging things we’ve hoarded over the winter.
But who says spring cleaning is limited to the inside of your house? The outside of your home could use a little refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!
Here are 10 outdoor spring cleaning project ideas that will drastically improve the appearance of your home, and, more importantly, will provide much-needed maintenance and care that will save you money in years to come.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the ideal time for gutter cleaning, since the majority of the leaves and debris accumulate during the fall and winter. Pollen is at its highest during spring, making a mess in your gutters and downspouts if they aren’t properly cleaned.
Plus, pests and critters are looking for places to build homes during spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the outside of your gutters as well, removing mold, mildew and stains and restoring them to like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Exterior window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows shouldn’t give you too much of a problem, but those second and third floors are a bit trickier to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is an exhausting job, and it will require a lot of supplies, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A pressure wash or soft wash of your exterior windows is the perfect way to get the panes and the outer frame cleaned.
3. Pressure Washing
While we’re on the topic of pressure washing, why not go ahead and do the whole exterior of your home?
Pressure washing is fast, effective, and affordable. You can clean your house, outdoor furniture, patios, porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so it won’t stain your home, and you can prevent the spread of mold, mildew, and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem counter-productive since you’ll just be driving on it, but actually, a clean, well-maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washer can do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, stone, or some other material. Also consider adding a gravel or mulch border to your driveway to really make it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your patio probably gets the most use during the summer, so it’s easy to overlook it during the winter when you aren’t doing as much outdoor entertaining, relaxing or grilling. Therefore, your patio can be in pretty bad shape the first time you step onto it in spring.
Soap and water – and a little elbow grease – are sometimes enough for patio cleaning, but if you see signs of mold or algae, you may need to consider a more aggressive option, like power washing, to ensure than friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Algae and moss are common roof problems. While you’re cleaning the outside of your home, it’s a great time to clean the roof as well, but you’ll have to use a different method than what you use for the rest of your home’s exterior.
If you see streaks on your roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is fairly obvious, too. These particles can’t be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof. Both of these methods will ruin your shingle roof.
The best course of action for roof cleaning is to spray the roof with a half-bleach, half-water mixture and let it sit. This will kill any organisms on your roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Front Porch
The front of your home is what most people see, so make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Coming home to a beautiful exterior will instantly improve your day, and it will encourage you to spend more time outdoors.
Clean your porch with soap and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and dirt off the front door, and think about painting it for a really fresh look! Clean overlooked areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Outdoor Tools
You’ll soon be spending a lot more time outside, so spring is a great opportunity to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor play and hobbies.
Children’s toys, gardening tools, and pool care equipment should all have a specific place outside your home – somewhere that it is safe from weather and out of sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring will allow you to enjoy the outside of your home so much more during the time of year when you spend the most time outdoors.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Just like your driveway, these areas can make a big impact on the overall look of your home.
Weed around the exterior of your flower beds and walkways, till up areas where you’ll be planting later on, and sweep off walkways, making repairs if needed. You can also spray pre-emergent weed killer to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for months, your grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family sick.
Wet it down to remove leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber (so you don’t leave behind metal particles that can get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
